How to get into Data Science after Graduating

Have a passion for Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence? You may have heard about the new uprise for Data Scientists and Analysts. Created to help companies make sense of their data, help improve workflow and generate more revenue. Demand in Data Science has tripled over the past 5 years rising 231%. So why not join the wave and be part of the future of tech?

What do you need?

Typically you will require a Mathematical, Engineering or Computer Science related degree to get your foot in the door. As Data Science is a mixture of business intelligence and programming a keen interest in both is key!

Knowledge of R, Python, C or Java is a preference within Data Science. R is a free, open-source software that is used within Data Science and Statistics. It may take a while to learn but you can use R to solve any problem you encounter in data science. In fact, 43% of data scientists are using R to solve statistical problems. Python looks to be the most used programming language of 2021, which is no surprise when you consider the rise in AI, Machine Learning and Data Science.

Why Data Science?

If you are in it for the money then this isn't the job for you. A role within Data is tough as you have to constantly monitor data and code, things you need a passion for. Two categories within Data Science are:

Artificial Intelligence - Humans create machines that attempt to replicate human intelligence. Used in business to increase efficiency and enhance performance. AI is especially integrated into tasks that take a lot of manual clicking or data entry, for example, to let humans do more complex tasks that require the human brain.

Machine Learning - Machine learning algorithms use statistics to find patterns in massive amounts of data. Machine learning is the process that powers many of the services we use today—recommendation systems like those on Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify. The more you click the more they learn about you!

What will you be doing?

You will be working closely with your company to propose solutions using real-time data to create effective decisions. Work with AI, Machine Learning and statistical tools to create solutions to business problems. Assess data sources and create intelligent reports to collate and improve business functions.

Improve your technical skills

Competition will always be tough, whichever market you choose. However, it’s always a great idea to gain as much exposure as possible. Kaggle is a great platform to start this on. Inside Kaggle you’ll find all the code and data you need to do your data science work. You can delve into and use over 50,000 public datasets and 400,000 public notebooks to conquer any analysis in no time. There are a variety of courses online that you may also want to research so you can improve your coding experience before applying.

Networking

Networking will always seem more daunting than it actually is. Events are created so that you can share your views and opinions with like-minded individuals. With the current pandemic, a lot of events have moved to be virtual. Meaning you do have the opportunity to take a back seat if you don't feel comfortable going just yet. Also, you can virtually attend events all over the world you may not have been able to attend in the past due to its distance. Here are some examples:

Data Science London - is one of the largest Data Science communities in Europe. A community of Data Scientists, Machine Learners, and Data Hackers that discuss all this Data Science. A great place to get to know people in your industry and make some great long-lasting connections.

Virtual events such as Data Science Webinar – How to get started as a Data Scientist with Python by Chaptr Global. This can help you with your initial application steps to ensure you are up to date with the latest Data Science tech.

Check more out on Eventbrite. Whether that's Artificial Intelligence or Data Science there is something for everyone!
