How To Get A Graduate Tech Role With No Experience

Whether you’ve completed a degree in software engineering, data science, information technology, cybersecurity, or any other tech-based degree, you’re likely aware that graduate careers can be difficult to kickstart.

This is because many employers require years of experience before considering your CV. That being said, many people have broken into the industry without having any experience - and you can too.

In this blog, we’ll be exploring how you can land your dream role in the tech industry, so read on to find out some of the best ways you can get a tech job with no experience.

Update Your CV

Don’t be afraid to showcase your skillset on your CV - your CV is no place to be humble. Consider the skills you honed during your degree, and think about the transferable skills you have acquired throughout your time at university.

Your tech-related degree most likely enabled you to hone your tech skills/ technical skills, communication skills, problem-solving skills, and many more.

If you completed work experience or went on placement during your degree, what skills did you develop or learn? If you don’t have many hard skills, emphasise your soft skills - the core skills that apply to most professions. For example, teamwork, leadership or communication.

When updating your CV, be sure to tailor your skills and experience to the role you’re applying for. Assess the job description and include the skills you’re confident in, as well as the personal qualities that will make you a good fit for the role.

If you’re short in experience, it may help your application to include any extracurricular activities and relevant societies or teams you were a member of, and the skills that this helped you to develop. Granted, if you are yet to create an up-to-date CV, you can do so with ease by using our in-depth CV builder.

Seek Graduate Employers and Graduate Schemes

One of the best ways to find tech graduate jobs is to look for graduate employers and graduate schemes. Grad schemes can be a great way to get your foot in the door of a large company, and many graduate schemes have a focus on professional development within the company.

Although some employers will only hire people with experience, many actively seek graduates that they can train - they understand that most graduates will have little to no industry experience, but do have fresh knowledge of the industry.

Some graduate schemes will only accept those with specific degrees or specific diplomas - for example, some graduate recruitment specialists may accept anybody with a tech-related degree, whereas others may only accept applicants with a 1st class degree in Computer Science.

Usually, graduate schemes will become available to you during your final year at university - often between September and January. Although it’s usually larger companies that offer grad schemes, more and more smaller companies are taking part in such schemes.

Graduate schemes can provide you with in-house experience and can be a great stepping stone for your career. Alternatively, it can allow you to progress through the ranks of a company.

Opt for an Internship or Apprenticeship

If you wish to gain experience in the tech industry, one of the best routes is to complete an internship or apprenticeship.

Although the salary may not be as enticing as other graduate roles, internships and apprenticeships can help you gain a long-term or permanent tech position, and give you the knowledge and experience you need to thrive.

Likewise, through an apprenticeship, you can earn a wage whilst building a network of contacts. You may also be able to secure a permanent, full-time position at the company after completing your internship.

Ultimately, a tech-based apprenticeship or internship looks great on your CV and demonstrates that you have first-hand experience in the tech industry. Whether the course is a couple of months long or several years long, completing it can increase your chances of landing your dream tech job.

Network With Industry Professionals

Networking is everything in 2023 - the more people you know, the higher the chance of landing your dream role. Many people utilise LinkedIn and other social media platforms - LinkedIn can be a great way to grow your digital network and connect with like-minded individuals. On LinkedIn, you can seek recruiters or connect with business wonders.

Another way to grow your network is to attend networking events or career fairs. These can help you to meet business owners and gain a further understanding of the tech industry.

Many universities will host Alumni events, which can be another way to get your foot in the door. It can also be helpful to keep in touch with lecturers and people you met on placement - these contacts can point you in the right direction if they come across any entry-level tech jobs in the tech industry.
